Itoh Kyuemon Uji Main Store 伊藤久右衛門宇治本店

One of the most famous teahouse in Uji, well known for their matcha desserts, especially matcha parfait. They even have 2 outlets in Uji, one at Uji Station, and the other one is the main store, well of course we went for the main store!

Special Itoh Kyuemon Parfait + Matcha Set (¥1690)

One of the desserts in Uji we are keenly anticipating for!

When it finally arrived, wow! All the Japanese produce/ingredients in one tall glass!

Straightaway you could see 2 types of chestnut; roasted and steamed type, next is the matcha jelly, shiratama dango, matcha and vanilla ice cream, matcha biscuit, and a dollop of adzuki beans.

The parfait is great, very tasty and not too sweet with a lot of different textures and contrast overall. The contrast of the matcha jelly with a subtle bitterness with the rich matcha ice cream and milky sweet vanilla ice cream. Next is another contrast of taste and texture from the 2 types of chestnut, soft to slight bite with an earthiness taste. Lastly, the contrast between the chewy shiratama and adzuki beans, chewy and soft with a sweet taste. If one wants a stronger matcha taste, can always add more of the matcha powder that comes on the side. (For me, it’s adding a generous amount, I like the strong matcha taste, and less sweet as possible.)

Overall: Very enjoyable parfait. Using fresh, good quality and natural ingredients, letting the quality of the ingredients do the talking.

We will definitely go for their parfait again when we are in Uji!

Actually we also dined at their Kyoto outlet couple of days later. The standard of the parfait in our opinion maintains the same quality, just that the ambience is very noisy, imagine aunties and housewives’ gossiping session.

[Seasonal] Matcha Mont Blanc Parfait + Matcha Set (¥1790)

Of course we had to try one of the seasonal menu item, and it is in season for Mont Blanc (Chestnut)!

Off the bat, you can already see the seasonal produce, the 3 types of chestnut; roasted, steamed, and puree (Mont Blanc) right at the top of the parfait. The rest of the ingredients are matcha ice cream, matcha jelly, and meringue.

This seasonal parfait compared to the regular one is missing the shiratama, adzuki beans, matcha biscuit, vanilla ice cream, but has an additions of mont blanc and meringue.

The parfait is great, very tasty and not too sweet overall. The contrast of the matcha jelly with a subtle bitterness with the rich matcha ice cream, and then another contrast of taste and texture from the 3 types of chestnut, smooth to soft to slight bite, earthiness and sweet taste. If one wants a stronger matcha taste, can always add more of the matcha powder that comes on the side.

Overall: My wife has the same opinion as me for her parfait. Very enjoyable parfait. Using fresh, good quality and natural ingredients, letting the quality of the ingredients do the talking.

Matcha

The matcha is very fragrant, rich flavour and the leaning on the bitter side. Definitely a good pairing to balance the sweetness from the parfait.
