Kuzukiri (¥1400)

This dish is made to order, so it will take some time to be served. I have to admit when it arrived, I do like the traditional presentation of the Kuzukiri, from how the Kuzukiri and Kuromitsu is stored and also the aesthetics of it.

Came in a 2 tiers container, where the top part contains the Kuzukiri and the bottom part contains the Kuromitsu.

Onto the review, ingredients of this dish are just Kudzu (made from Arrowroot) and water served cold, with a Kuromitsu (black sugar syrup) as a dipping sauce.

Texture: Jelly-like, very smooth and thin with a slight chew to it, and very slurpable. A bit similar in a sense to konjac noodles, that will be the closest I can compare to.

Taste: It is actually tasteless, thus most people will dip into the Kuromitsu to eat with. Even when dipped into the Kuromitsu, it is not too sweet either, so makes it an enjoyable and fun to eat with.

Overall: I really enjoy this unique and traditional dessert! But one thing I will emphasis on is, the dessert by itself is tasteless, it is more on eating for the texture and “feel” and dipping into the Kuromitsu for the overall taste.

Warabimochi (¥1100)

I think Warabimochi does not need any introduction, so let’s go straight into the review!

When served, the presentation does look good, simple and elegant. The Warabimochi is cut into evenly size cube of 6, covered in Kinako (roasted soybean flour) with a pourable Kuromitsu on the side.

Texture: Dense in weight and very smooth in texture, it can be cut through easily without any effort and melts in your mouth, that’s how smooth it is.

Taste: As like the Kuzukiri, Warabimochi also doesn’t have much taste by itself. The flavours mainly comes from the slight nuttiness/earthiness from the Kinako, and sweetness/slight bitterness from the Kuromitsu.

Overall: Kagizen Yoshifusa’s desserts are all about refine and elegance. Looks simple, but texture is just pure class, same with it’s aesthetics presentation and plating.

This is my personal preference, but comes to Warabimochi, I’m more on the old school style, which is the more chewy kind. I will cover another awesome dessert restaurant that serves that style in another review. So stay tune for it!

Matcha (¥800)

By the 3rd item, you would have guess; simple and elegant presentation is the style of this restaurant in our opinion.

The matcha is smooth, creamy, with a slight bitterness to it. It is an enjoyable bowl of matcha.

Overall

The desserts here slightly on the pricier side, but I guess it is understandable for it’s location (right in Gion, near Yasaka Shrine), nice ambience inside, and the overall quality of the desserts.

I will definitely be back if I’m around the area for the Kuzukiri, as it both great and unique! So in short, I will be back there because almost most (if not all) Kyoto tourists will go pass that area at least once in their trip.

A good place for a quick pitstop to rest and enjoy the Kuzukiri, and then make our way to explore Kyoto on foot (many steps daily).
