From my research, Grill Otsuka is one of the top restaurants in Kanazawa for western cuisine, specifically their Hanton Rice and Hamburger Steak. So we decided to eat this for our dinner after our day trip to Shirakawago.

Hanton Rice is a rice omelette dish with fried shrimp and fish, a slight twist from the usual omurice with chicken meat.
The presentation itself looks really old school, definitely not something you will say to have great plating or so.
Omelette is decent but other than that I could only taste the ketchup and cream sauce, even on the rice itself just feels like plain rice wrapped in the omelette.
For the fried seafood, don’t really feel any taste or crunchiness from the batter also.
Overall it is passable, but not something I would come back for.

Presentation style is the same as the Hanton Rice, old school and looks not the best to be frank.
Just to cut it short, only the hamburger steak is decent in the whole dish.
The meat is tender and does have flavour in compared to the other bland accompaniments of this dish.

We have to give our honest review and scores based on what we ate.
But, and this is a big assumption that I could think of. If this is a childhood taste to the locals who grew up eating the Hanton Rice and Hamburger Steak in that particular way and taste, thus it reminds them of the taste they have grown up with even though it is not something exceptional.
A throwback to an old school pork chop restaurant we ate in Taipei a couple of years back, the food was decent but nothing exceptional. But it reminds me of the old school cooking method and taste of my grandma’s cooking when I was young, it was very memorable and precious taste (and memory) for me. Deep down in my heart, I really wished that the next time I visit the restaurant in Taipei, it will still be that same old school taste. Because it’s really hard or can’t find such dish in Singapore anymore.
But I digress, so this restaurant could be the same story to the locals in Kanazawa.
By the way, my wife won’t get it (regards to the Pork Chop Rice story) cause she’s Vietnamese, and I’m Singaporean.
