Shiroebitei - Famous White Shrimp of Toyama Bay
Shiroebitei
One of the must-try food and local delicacy in Toyama, which is the Shiro Ebi (White Shrimp) aka “the jewel of Toyama Bay”. Of course, we have to try it since our train ride ends at Toyama Station after concluding our tiring but a fulfilling day trip to Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.
Shiroebi Sashimi Don - 90 Shiroebi (¥2190)
Although I purchase a don, apparently it comes as a set too.
The set consists of shiroebi sashimi don, shiroebi tempura, shiroebi cracker, preserved vegetables, and a bowl of soup.
The shiroebi sashimi don comes with thinly sliced fried egg placed below the shiroebi, minced garlic on top of the sashimi, and rice as the base.
On the first bite (by the way, this is also my first experience trying shiroebi):
Taste: Slight sweetness with ocean taste
Texture: Soft and a bit of chewiness to it
When eating together with the sliced fried egg, rice, and some shoyu, you can feel the sweetness from the shrimp, saltiness from both the shoyu and shrimp, which brings in a rich combination. As per my wife says it’s a comfort food especially during cold weather, as this dish gives her a warm feeling.
Onto the sides, the shiroebi tempura’s batter is fry nice and crunchy, overall taste is ok. The shiroebi cracker is actually quite decent as a snack, crisp with the shiroebi taste.
No doubt, the star is definitely the shiroebi sashimi don.
Rating: 3.25/5

Overall
I think it’s worth trying it for the unique taste and texture, and for the experience. Especially you are also on the same itinerary as us, arriving at Toyama Station after a day trip at Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, and going back to the city your hotel is based at after dinner.
Although it is not a dish that I will travel there just to eat it, but to be fair it might be also due to we are not eating at the best season for shiroebi. Per the information I got from various websites using Google, the best season is during spring to summer. Probably the flavour and taste will be much better when eaten during then?
