Probably the most famous and traditional restaurant for Anagomeshi in Miyajima area, almost everyone will recommend this restaurant to try if you are in Miyajima. Plus with their prime location, which definitely adds to their advantage.

They are located in between the Miyajimaguchi train station and ferry station (where visitors require to take the ferry from to Miyajima Island).

The dish that everyone comes to Anagomeshi Ueno for, their bowl of Anagomeshi.

Let’s dive straight in!

Taste: Rich sweetness and umami flavour from their special marinate plus on the grill. But one point to highlight, we can’t really feel the natural taste of the anago.

Texture: The meat is very tender and fresh.

Overall: The eel meat is good and goes well with the rice, so it won’t be too sweet or savoury compared to eating on its own. But we feel the marinate might be a bit too much/imbalanced for the overall taste and might have masked the natural taste of the eel.

We have much higher expectations due to the restaurant having a long history (100+ years) as an authentic local speciality restaurant and also the high number of great reviews they have gotten. Not saying this is bad, it is still a very good dish, but not reaching the great level of standard for us.

Our appetizer dish prior to the Anagomeshi, but this took the limelight away.

Taste: Compared to the Anagomeshi, we can fully taste the anago’s natural sweetness and savoury grilled smoky profile. It has a nice balance and taste profiles are working in tandem.

Texture: Same as the Anagomeshi, the meat is very tender and fresh.

Overall: Both of us like this more compared to the marinated version, because we are able to enjoy the full natural sweetness and grilled smoky taste. Plus the versatility to also adjust it ourselves to make it more salty or spicy with the fresh wasabi and salt if required.

Overall

Worth a try if you are ok with the slightly higher price tag, as with most seafood dishes.

I would also recommend you to order an additional side dish of grilled Anago, so you can try both the OG and marinated taste of the Anago.
