BOTANI:CURRY - Beautiful and colourful plate of curry
BOTANI:CURRY
When I was researching for food places to try in Osaka, I saw this super beautiful and colourful plate of curry, and in go this for one of our must-try list for Osaka.
And with its 3.93/5 rating on Tabelog for non-fine dining kind of food and prices, it is considered super high rating. In my opinion, any restaurant with a score above 3.8 for non-fine dining kind of food is really highly rated on Tabelog.
Botani Curry (Chicken) + Egg Pickles + Cream Cheese Tofu + Ichikara Spice Level (¥980 + ¥100 + ¥100 + ¥50)
First thing first, it is really as beautiful as those photos I found online, blogs, and instagram when I am doing the researching prior to the trip.
We ordered a few add-ons like the Egg Pickles, Cream Cheese Tofu, and Ichikara spice level (because we just want some spice and not overpower the entire dish for a first try).
Curry: Can taste the herbs and spice taste in it. The sweetness (from tomato-based I guess), savoury from the mixture of herbs and meat, and a slight spiciness (as we ordered Ichikara spice level). The texture is closer to a soup (watery) rather than a traditional curry which is thicker.
Vegetables: Colourful combination of vegetables that compliments the curry and it is a “field” dish. Too many to list out, but there are potatoes, tomatoes, onion, lotus root, seaweed, carrot, pickles, etc.
Meat: I will say the meat is not the star of the dish, it is just part of the crew. It is decent but nothing to shout out at.
Cream Cheese Tofu: Smooth and creamy, adds a different layer of rich taste to the dish.
Egg Pickles: We could never miss egg for a curry dish! It is decent, but a different taste from a normal egg or a local Singapore/Chinese type of salted egg. It has a subtle saltiness.
Overall: The stars of the dish will be the curry and vegetables. But the entire dish shines when you eat it together (curry, vegetables, and the rest), you have many different tastes and texture to it.
Taste: Sweet, salty, sour, spicy, fresh/herbal, quite an umami combination
Texture: Smooth, crunchy, and meaty
It becomes a unique curry dish of its own plus this dish is so beautiful and colourful, it is not just food, but almost like a work of art.
Truly their own unique type of curry, and this is what it makes this restaurant special.
Rating: 3.75/5
Entry to this restaurant is strictly by timeslot ticket, there’s no walk-ins or reservation.
The staff starts handing out these timeslot tickets at 10am (or earlier I guess), because when we reach there exactly at 10am, we are already at the batch of 12.30pm timeslot and the 4th and 5th guests.
So going by this I believe it is by every 30 minutes timeslot, so that means 3 full batches (as the restaurant opens at 11am) of 14 seats + 3 seats of my current batch has been given out.
So you might want to be there maybe 15 minutes earlier if you don’t want to get a much later timeslot like us.
How to get to the restaurant
Firstly, you will see their BOTANI:CURRY board outside at the main street.
Next, when you walk in the narrow corridor, you still can’t see the actual restaurant. But you will be able to see their lighted signboard on the right of the wall.
Finally, when you get closer to the lighted board, the restaurant is on the other side of the corridor.
