Keong Saik Bakery - One of the bakery in town that serves burnt cheesecake
Keong Saik Bakery
Wife is craving to try one of the recent hipster food which is the burnt/basque cheesecake, so we went down to Keong Saik Bakery which is located in Chinatown for brunch.
ps: The nearest bakery/restaurant that serves burnt cheesecake for us as we stay in the East.
Two-Face (S$8.5)
Half original, half matcha burnt cheesecake.
I guess this is probably the most popular burnt cheesecake in their store, a 2-in-1 flavour, creamylicious and looked like the cheese is going to ooze out any moment.
Texture: Smooth and melt-in-your-mouth as you can see from the photos.
Taste: It is a bit sweet and cheesy (as it should be) with a subtle bitterness from the matcha. Also, the burnt skin creates a bit of “smoky” feel compared to regular cheesecake.
We felt that it is balanced, both original and matcha taste is equal in strength, though I hope both the flavours can be stronger together.
As what I have read for their burnt cheesecake description tag in store, all their burnt cheesecake are made using 4 different types of cheese too!

Pandan Burnt Cheesecake (S$8)
Made with pandan leaves and coconut cream to give an authentic fragrance!
As I personally like Pandan, so I tried this over the regular Burnt Cheesecake, not sure how it fares over the regular one, but it is definitely not as good in comparison to the Two-Face.
Texture: Not as smooth and creamy as compared to the Two-Face.
Taste: It is too sweet, and the pandan flavour is very strong that I don’t really taste any of the cheese or “smoky” part.
If it’s called a Pandan Burnt Cake, definitely no problem with it although still missing the “smoky” part. If you like pandan you can give it a try, if not I will highly recommend to go with the Two-Face for your first visit.

Attap Chee Rose Cheesecake (S$7.5)
Attap chee, rose cheesecake & shortbread base.
This is our last-minute second visit which we ordered the Attap Chee Rose Cheesecake and Ispahan, and you can see that the photos are not as good, cause I don’t have my macro lens with me. These are shot with 35mm, slightly wide for food photography.
Texture: Smooth and solid with a chewy bite (from the attap seed).
Taste: Mixture of rose and cheese flavour, but it is very subtle. To be exact more like a regular cheesecake plus a bit of rose flavour. The first couple bites are ok, but after that all we feel is just sugar overpowering the flavours.
Rating: 2.75/5
Ispahan (S$9)
Lychee, rose & raspberry.
Texture: Smooth and creamy.
Taste: Unique taste of sweet, sour, and a hint of saltiness as per their flavour profile in the description. Same as the Attap Chee Rose Cheesecake, first couple bites are good. After that it is just sugar taste overpowering everything.
Although we have to say the fragrant it gave out is better than the taste, you can smell the fruits like they are placed in a basket.

Sor Hei (S$4)
Black & white Danish pastry, chocolate chips.
Quite an interesting colour and shape on first look.
Texture: Quite crisp and thin layer of dough.
Taste: Slightly sweetened with chocolate flavours in it.
Rating: 3/5
Overall
The Two-Face and Sor Hei is decent, but if you ask me as a local I do feel it is a bit pricey.
While I can understand partially, as per their location which is in town and part of a tourist/hipster attraction. But personally for me, I wouldn’t really visit it often or travel there just for the food.
Although if I’m bringing overseas friends around Chinatown, it will be a rather good spot to rest and let them try their burnt cheesecake.
