Weng Kiang Kee Porridge - One of the best porridge in hawker scene
Weng Kiang Kee Porridge
One of the porridge place that I wanted to try for a few months already, as Dr Leslie gave such a high rating for it. We were around the area since we had brunch at Keong Saik Bakery, so we decided to drop by and have a go at it!
ps: I actually wanted to try it with my colleague some months ago on a weekday, but upon reaching there around 11.30am (if I remember correctly), it was already sold out.
Premium Porridge (S$5.5) + Egg (S$0.5)
Rich and flavourful: slightly sweet, naturally salty, a tinge of spice, and velvety porridge. Can feel the harmonious blend and the natural taste from using the premium ingredients, and of course the chef’s preparation and cooking skills to get to such quality. The intestines are clean properly, and not too chewy!
Saltiness from the pork ball, pork meat, century egg
Sweetness from the intestines, fish, cuttlefish, abalone
Subtle spice and sweetness from the ginger
Creamy goodness from the egg
When you mix all those flavours and texture in a spoonful, it’s a burst of flavour. Imagine your usual comfort food elevated up a few notches.
I like that when it comes default, the taste is already there, not like the usual standard porridge shops that you need to add a lot of soy sauce or pepper to get some taste into the porridge.
For this bowl of porridge, I just added a bit of pepper because I want to have more spice (preference), rather than it needs more flavours.
My wife is a porridge lover, so she can rate this much more accurately than me, and for her to give such (relatively) high scores say something. (As of now, we only have a few food reviews that has 4 or a higher score)
Rating: 3.75/5
Signature Porridge (S$4.5) + Egg (S$0.5)
Essentially a slightly lesser premium (ingredients) version of the Premium Porridge, but overall it’s the same and probably only very slightly lesser rich taste (due to lesser premium ingredients).
Thus the same rating as Premium Porridge.
Rating: 3.75/5
Triple Egg Porridge (S$4)
As the dish name, it is a combo of 3 types of egg in a bowl:
Salted Egg
Century Egg
Raw Egg
Definitely one for the egg lovers, the mixture of creaminess, saltiness and subtle sweetness all from the eggs. I don’t need to say much more on the porridge which we have mentioned above already, the porridge base and the triple egg is another great combo and adds another variety to the stall.
Also for people who don’t eat the innards (like myself), but you might find yourself lacking the meat for the meal, so you might want to add a portion of minced meat.
I was also asked whether I would like to add minced meat when I was ordering this, but I want to try this dish as it is without the added portion of minced meat for this review. I will definitely do so the next time when I am ordering this bowl again!
Can’t fault much for any of the porridge at this stall, and extremely good quality for a hawker stall.
Rating: 3.75/5
Overall
Very good porridge place in Singapore, and at a very affordable price for their quality and ingredients used.
From what I read from Dr Leslie’s post, Chef Charlie Chang previously worked in various luxury hotels as their chef before opening this stall last year. So in short, you are getting 5 stars hotel chef quality (and passion) porridge at a hawker price.
