Maruaki - Our first ever A5 Wagyu Beef experience!
Maruaki
A popular Hida Beef Yakiniku restaurant in Takayama, and quite affordable for wagyu and even so for the A5 grade too!
This is one of the splurge meals of our trip, and we regretted that we didn’t splurge more.
Just look at those marbling of the A5 beef! So pretty that resembles like snowflakes!
Hida Beef A5 Tenderloin Steak - 120g (¥3980)
I know this is cliche, but it is our first time eating A5 grade wagyu beef, so we are going to say it.
Texture: Simply melt in your mouth, tender, juicy, and buttery smooth
Taste: Subtle natural sweetness
Rating: 4.25/5
Hida Beef A5 Sirloin Steak - 200g (¥4480)
Similar rating and quality as the Tenderloin.
Texture: Melt in your mouth, tender, juicy, and buttery smooth but with a bit more bite compared to the Tenderloin
Taste: More robust natural sweetness
Rating: 4.25/5
Overall
Although both are the same score, my preference will be the Sirloin.
Just like for Tonkatsu, I prefer rosu cut, but the wife prefers the hire cut if both are of the same standard.
But I digress, we do bulk a bit at the price when we are planning prior to the trip cause we do not want to spend that much. Now (more like in the restaurant itself) we are really regretting that decision, we should have ordered more!
Because at the price for A5 wagyu beef, it is really affordable to be very honest. If you want to eat the same standard in Singapore is going to be so much more expensive and freshness can’t be compared for sure.
Side story: I always told my wife the benchmark doneness for eating steak is medium-rare or rarer. But she always says that she does not really like it. Then during this session, I cook mainly medium-rare and rare, but she absolutely loves both doneness. This proves that she doesn’t dislike medium rare (or rare), more like she is conscious of the quality of the meat!
Since I knew this during the cooking session, I ate quite little and let her eat much more, thus I left the restaurant hungry and the reason of regret that we should order more haha!
