Komugi Umare Men Sodachi - Refreshing and unique in-house handmade noodles
Komugi Umare Men Sodachi 小麦生まれ、麺育ち。
This is one ramen restaurant that we went unplanned (and not even in my long list of food shortlist), but still got a pleasant surprise!
Initially we wanted to go Ramen Hayato, but we can’t queue prior to opening (as we just arrived in Japan that morning), and that means a very long queue already. So upon seeing the queue, we decided to go for Ramen Hayato on another day.
Feeling a bit sian, we head towards the subway station and walked past this restaurant with a short queue. We got curious and decided to do a quick google search for it’s review on Tabelog and Google, lo and behold we are in the queue for it too!
Chuka Soba Special (¥1000)
As I’m not sure what is the signature dish there, so me and wife just ordered 2 out of the 3 dishes they have there now, and of course if there’s a limited dish (which the wife is having), we just have to try it.
The Chuka Soba Special is of Shoyu broth and consists of the following ingredients:
2 types of pork meat
Ajitama
Seaweed
Bamboo shoot
Beansprouts
Perilla Leaf
Broth: Clear dark colour shoyu based broth with seafood and chicken; taste of umami, mellow sweet and saltiness, yet refreshing at the same time. You can probably see the extract of rich chicken oil (my guess) in my photos too.
Meat: This restaurant serves 2 types of pork:
Sliced Chashu - The conventional type that most ramen restaurant serves. Their rendition is rather thinly sliced and lean meat.
Pork Belly - Nice thickness and rather tender, near to melt in your mouth texture. A more robust taste and bite to it.
Actually, this is my first ramen restaurant that I ate that serves pork belly, although I do encounter more ramen restaurants during my 2022 Japan trip that serves this type of pork too.
Ramen Egg: Decent with a relatively runny yolk.
Noodle: Flat-ish type with medium thickness. The texture is very unique in a good way, very fresh and chewy/bouncy (QQ), also have a very fragrant taste too. Upon first bite, you can notice it is different from most ramen restaurants.
No wonder it is in-house handmade noodles, and as per their posters around the shop, using newly harvest Hokkaido wheat.
The noodles is definitely the star of the dish for me, and rarely do I give such compliment to the noodles component for a ramen dish. It is really that good!
Overall: Every component of the dish is decent, but the standout has got to be their in-house handmade noodles using Hokkaido wheat.
Rating: 3.25/5
[Autumn Limited] Saury Fish Soba (¥1200)
When come to limited stuff in Japan, we are like the locals, definitely must try it (at least once), and so we did.
Noodle: Of course they will be using the same noodles as the Chuka Soba, it is just so darn good. Just scroll up to read on the noodles component above (if you somehow missed it).
Dipping Sauce: Dark colour shoyu based broth with Saury Fish and Chicken; nice umami taste but it is on the lighter side, it is also not spicy even though you see chili flakes on it in the photos.
It has the same pork belly used in Chuka Soba, and also sliced leeks in it.
Rating: 3.25/5
Overall
We just have to emphasis again, the noodles are really great, easily a 3.5/5 for us if we are only rating the noodles on it’s own.
Also, we believe the Thick and Creamy Tori Paitan also their signature dish, a lot of the diners there ordered that. But as mentioned we dined in here unplanned and neither of us can eat 2 bowls of ramen at that instance.
Next time I guess!
