Lau De Tu Diep - Awesome charcoal grilled & hotpot goat meat!
Lau De Tu Diep
Recommended by both my wife and our mutual friend to try this place (dinner after photoshoot), as this is one of their favorite eats in Ho Chi Minh City.
Setting is a very common street-side type of restaurant in HCMC, where diners eat at mini tables and stools.
Based on both of them, the restaurant’s signature dishes are the grilled and hotpot style goat meat. We tried a total of 3 dishes during our visit, the 3rd dish is a stir fry curry style. Priced at 180k, 190k, and 200k for S, M, and L size respectively.
For people going without any Vietnamese friends, no worries as the menu has both English and Vietnamese languages.
*Score will be based on my wife, as I have not eaten much of this dish to rate it properly.
Charcoal Grilled Goat Meat (180k VND)
The star of the night! Charcoal grilled goat breast meat, very tender and chewy.
I’m not a big fan of chewy meat (my wife absolutely loves it though), but it was pretty good meat in terms of freshness and juiciness, and quite balanced after dipping with the provided sauce.
Rating: 4/5
Stir Fry Curry Goat Meat (180k VND)
The worst of the 3 dishes in my opinion.
Curry texture is like curry stew, similar to Vietnamese style curry beef stew which you could dip a baguette onto the curry sauce and eat too. Curry taste a bit on the sweeter side and slight watery.
Overall I feel it’s pretty normal, I wouldn’t say it’s bad, but just pales in comparison with the grilled and hotpot variant.
Rating: 3/5
Charcoal Hotpot Goat Meat (180k VND)
Finishing off with a hearty hotpot based goat meat.
Slight gaminess (but lesser than mutton soup) with a herbal twist, to make it more balance overall.
With ingredients like yam, dried bean curd (tau kee), pickled bamboo shoot, lotus root, and chye sim to complement the goat based soup.
If you like mutton soup, definitely give this a try too.
