Udon Bo - Tasty Sanuki Udon and Champon!
Udon Bo
Our only udon entry in the food list to eat for our entire Japan trip in 2019, but this is a popular and highly rated (3.87 on Tabelog as of writing this post) udon restaurant in Osaka.
Chiku Tamaya Store (¥1050)
Don’t ask me why regards to the dish name, I just used the google translate of this dish name in Japanese (ちく玉ひや店) on their official site.
But in short, it is a cold dish version of tempura soba with an egg, dashi stock and lime.
The tempura ingredients consist of shrimp, chikuwa, seaweed, and vegetables. Other ingredients are egg, sesame seeds, and spring onions. Finally, there’s dashi stock and lime to mix it together with the udon and ingredients.
Udon: Sanuki Udon style. It is very slurpable, smooth and firm but with a (nice) gummy texture when biting into it.
Tempura: Lightly battered and crisp, deliciously done.
Egg: As you can see in the photos, golden runny yolk.
Overall: When you mix in the dashi stock, lime, egg yolk and eat together with the soba, it creates a harmonious taste. I will say a refreshing zest to a cold dish, which makes it very easy to keep eating and finishing it. I can imagine this is a great choice during summertime.
I just feel in general maybe udon is not that mainstream for us non-locals (compared to ramen and soba), but I do like it and will definitely return for more if I am in Osaka again.

Champon (¥900)
A popular dish with the ladies, lots of vegetables and it is soup based!
From what my wife can remember as she is the one having this dish as I tried a couple of spoonful of it only, the ingredients are cabbage, carrot, black fungus, leek, sliced pork, squid, and a ginger paste for you to mix in.
Taste: Sweet and subtle salty taste from the meat, seafood, and vegetables
Texture: The vegetables are cooked till soft, and the seafood and meat are soft and chewy texture
Soup: I believe the soup has added flour/cornstarch or something to make it to a thicker texture.
Overall: Very easy to eat from the combination of smooth and soft texture and sweet taste. Makes it a good choice for most ladies, and also a rather healthy dish at it too (other than the carbs)!
