A well-known café in Kurashiki, this spot is a charming traditional specialty coffeehouse that roasts its own beans in-house and serves only cloth-dripped coffee. With its retro décor and cosy atmosphere, it transports you back in time, encouraging you to slow down, unwind, and savour the moment.

The Queen of Kohaku

The Queen of Kohaku (¥800)

Dutch coffee with honey, liquor, and milk.

With the first sip, the missus tasted honey, liquor, and milk; all wrapped in a rich, creamy coconut texture — somewhat reminiscent of drinking Baileys (the liqueur).

She also noticed that the coffee comes in the form of an ice cube, meaning it takes time to slowly melt and “infuse” into the drink.

As time passes, the coffee’s bitterness gradually intensifies, blending with the honey, liquor, and milk to reveal the drink’s full character — a beautifully complex balance of sweetness and subtle bitterness, with a thick and creamy texture.

Overall: It feels more like a sweet, dessert-style alcoholic drink, similar to Baileys rather than a traditional coffee “coffee”. Nevertheless, it’s still an interesting and unique creation, certainly worthy of its status as their signature drink.

If you're in the area or/and a coffee enthusiast, it's definitely worth a try. I've heard that many visit just for The Queen of Kohaku.

Cafe Cappuccino (¥750)

Coffee with cinnamon and whipped cream on top.

With the first sip, I was met with the rich, velvety texture of thick whipped cream, followed by the warm, sweet, and subtly spiced notes of cinnamon, finishing with the fresh, bold, and a bit oily essence of coffee.

I found this combination intriguing — the inclusion of cinnamon and whipped cream added depth, with the whipped cream contributing a smooth sweetness and richness, while the cinnamon offered a delicate balance of sweetness and spice. The contrast between the two types of sweetness made it even more interesting.

Overall: To me, this feels more like a dessert drink rather than a coffee “coffee” drink, as the sweetness overpowers the coffee’s profile. However, that might just be due to my personal preferences and diet, as I typically minimise sugar intake and may not be accustomed to such sweetness.

That said, for most first-time drinkers, especially those with a sweet tooth, it should be an interesting and enjoyable experience.
